Ashlee Fly Necklace - Insects

The fly button on a patterned brass background in this striking necklace has a scandalous story in the button collecting world. In the early 1940s, the Ashlee Button Company acquired some antique button stampings from a shuttered factory which they repurposed and then sold to button collectors and dealers.

Some unscrupulous dealers then sold them as antiques when in fact they contained antique parts but had new construction. It was a true button controversy! The newly constructed buttons are now eighty years old so we can sell them without fear of repercussion.

The fly stamping likely dates from the late nineteenth century which leaves us pondering why Victorian women considered common house flies to be alluring fashion accessories.

In this piece:

  • Brass button circa 1940 made with older parts
  • Heavy brass chain
  • Length is 20” with a 4” extender
