Chrysanthemums and Cranes Necklace - Birds

In this pendant necklace, a mid-century Japanese pottery button links to a Victorian brass button which is anchored by a 1930s Art Deco enamel buckle. We love how popular styles from three different historical eras harmoniously intermingle in this handsome design.

The top button features a chrysanthemum and was fashioned in the Japanese tradition of Satsuma pottery which was characterized by a cream-colored base decorated with an ivory crackle glaze. Kimonos don’t require buttons, so Japan manufactured these for export when they started trading with the west in the mid-nineteenth century. Satsuma buttons were fashionable between 1850 and 1950 and most often featured flowers, people in traditional dress, dragons, birds, and Japanese landscapes.

The brass buckle gets its dapper green color from a process called 'basse taille' -a technique in which a translucent colored enamel is placed upon an engraved patterned background.

In this piece:

  • Mid-century Japanese Satsuma button with chrysanthemums
  • Large antique brass button with three flying cranes, circa 1890-1900
  • Half of an Art Deco 'basse taille' green enamel buckle circa the 1930s
  • Hand-wrapped glass beads
  • Gold-plated chain
  • Length is 32”
