Golden Age Rose Necklace

One of our best finds this year was a set of eight Golden Age men’s jacket buttons circa 1834 to 1843. They were nicknamed Golden Age because of their high quality stamped designs and extraordinarily beautiful gilding. Look carefully and you will see traces of the original gold in the background of the wild rose design. These button beauties were a precursor to the ubiquitous brass blazer buttons that remain popular today.

The Golden Age buttons we found were back-marked Benedict, Burnham, Extra, which is the name of a company founded in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1812. The company still exists but they only operated with this name from 1834-1843, thus making these buttons highly collectible. Today the company is called the Waterbury Button Company.

In this piece:

  • Gilded two-piece brass button with wild rose, back marked Benedict and Burnham Extra circa 1834-1843.
  • Antiqued brass setting made in Louisiana
  • Antiqued brass chain
  • Tiny antique brass button at end of the chain extender
  • Length is 18” with 4” extender
