Brilliant Bavarian Dinner Plate
This delightful grass-green porcelain dinner plate was created for Chicago’s famed Marshall Field’s department store by the Tirschenreuth Bavaria company of Germany. In their day, each set of plates was packaged in a luxury, felt-wrapped Marshall Field’s box to protect the plate’s twenty-two karat gold scrolling.
We hand-applied a bright-colored illustration of a bird, taken from a 19th-century natural history book, onto the center of the plate. We love how the practical illustration contrasts with the ornate china pattern creating an eccentric cabinet of curiosities vibe.
Our founder, Susan Davis, is a zealous collector of all things old, beautiful and interesting. While button hunting, she often finds all manner of collectibles she cannot bear to leave behind. This is how our studio came to house a substantial collection of lovely antique and vintage china plates.
