The antique Victorian-era picture button we chose for these dramatic earrings depicts Charles V, the King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, between 1519 and 1556.
Charles was one of the most influential European monarchs of all time, ruling over what today encompasses Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and parts of Italy and central Europe. He was known for trying to reform the Roman Catholic Church while defending his empire against Islam and Protestantism.
We're forever in awe of how the miniature tableaus depicted on antique buttons provide intriguing insights into Victorian-era fascinations.
