Celluloid, the world's first semi-synthetic plastic, was patented in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt. Celluloid could be used to realistically imitate valuable materials like ivory, tortoiseshell, marble, and mother-of-pearl, and thus transformed button manufacturing by creating infinite new design possibilities.
