These earrings showcase two mid-century West German milk glass buttons hand painted in a cheerful blue pattern embellished with delicate gold luster.

German glassmaking is rooted in Bavaria, where local artisans were influenced by their peers in nearby Bohemia. When Czechoslovakia annexed Northern Bavaria after WWII, the resident glassmakers fled and set up workshops in their new West German communities. They built a thriving glass button industry, and by 1950 West Germany was considered the glass button capital of the world.

In this piece:

  • Vintage hand-painted milk glass buttons made in Western Germany, circa 1950-1960
  • Brass-plated pewter settings cast today in the USA
  • Nickel-free and lead-free brass kidney ear wires
  • Length is 1 ⅞”
