Enamel Nouveau and Ocean Pearl Necklace

We were thrilled to find a set of the lovely Art Nouveau champleve’ enamel buttons on one of our recent button hunting trips. We used four for this necklace design, two for bracelets, and still had enough to make several pairs of earrings.

We love how the pinks, blues, and greens in the enamel button are reflected in the iridescence of the large, carved ocean pearl the enamel button is set in. Button manufacturers started to use the dark sides of ocean shells for buttons in the 1850s. Charles Dickens wrote about seeing one of these buttons for the first time while touring a Birmingham button factory and described it as “gleaming with green and lilac colors when moved in the light.”

In this piece:

  • French Art Nouveau champleve’ enamel button, circa 1880-90
  • Large, dark carved ocean pearl button, circa 1890-1900
  • Stamped brass setting made in the USA in vintage dies
  • Brass plated pewter ring
  • Hand-wrapped smokey topaz glass bead chain
  • The chain can be worn long at 32” or doubled up and worn short at 16”
