These heartfelt earrings showcase two vintage mid-century modern styled West German turquoise glass hearts

Czechoslovakia glassmakers were the first to develop methods for press-molding stunning glass buttons in the early 19th century. Their German counterparts in nearby northern Bavaria followed in their footsteps and adopted the trade.

When Czechoslovakia annexed Northern Bavaria after WWII, the resident German glassmakers fled and set up workshops in their new communities. They built a thriving glass button industry, and by 1950 West Germany was considered the glass button capital of the world. The glass hearts in these earrings were hand-pressed by German glass artisans working at the pinnacle of their craft.

Hearts are, of course, a common symbol in jewelry design. The heart shape first came to signify love in the Middle Ages. It gained popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries and became widely used in jewelry design throughout subsequent centuries.
