We think the luminous sapphire glass intaglios featured in these earrings belie the fierce spirit of their namesake, Lady Florence Dixie.
Lady Florence was a 19th-century Scottish writer, war correspondent, and boisterous advocate for women's rights. As an adolescent, Lady Florence rode her horse astride and matched her brothers when swimming, riding, or hunting. She bravely refused to conform to societal fashion standards when presented to Queen Victoria.
As an adult, she wrote popular books for both adults and children with topics exploring the position of girls and women in Victorian society. She was a rebel through and through and shared with her husband a passion for travel and adventure.
These light sapphire glass intaglios were hand-pressed in mid-century Germany. Intaglios have a negative carving, meaning the image is set into the glass. This differentiates them from cameos whose images are carved in relief, appearing to sit on top of the stone.
We imagine Lady Florence galloping on a horse wearing these beautiful earrings like a rebellious talisman.
