These elegant earrings boast a rare combination of vintage West German, Czech, and Soviet glass.

The bottom button was made in the U.S.S.R. Both the factory that created it and the U.S.S.R itself are now in history's dustbin. Yet, this button survived and found you.

Directly above the Soviet button is a mid-century West German glass cabochon with bright gold luster garnishes. German glassmaking is rooted in Bavaria. Influenced by their Czech counterparts in nearby Bohemia, German glassmakers developed exceptional glass button-making skills over the centuries.

When Czechoslovakia became part of the Soviet Union after WWII, the resident German glassmakers fled and set up workshops in their new West German communities. They built a thriving glass button industry, and by 1950 West Germany was considered the glass button capital of the world.

On top is a lovely vintage jet crystal manufactured in the Czech Republic by a glass artisan still using centuries-old manufacturing processes today.

In this piece, from the bottom:

  • Soviet-era jet glass button made in the U.S.S.R.
  • Vintage get glass cabochon with gold luster, made in West Germany, circa 1950-1960
  • Vintage jet Czech crystal
  • Three-bezel brass setting made today in the USA in vintage dies
  • Nickel-free and lead-free brass lever-back ear wires
  • Length is 2”
