The rare matching pair of one-of-a-kind, antique brass buttons we chose for these cufflinks depict Neptune, the Greek god of the sea. They’re the perfect gift for seafaring dads who hope to appease the mythical ruler of the waves.

Neptune, with his iconic trident, was fabled to have a violent, vindictive, and difficult temperament that sailors sought to appease to ensure their safety while at sea. He was also a warrior who could be counted on to help Roman armies fight and win sea battles.

Greek and Roman gods were, surprisingly to us, common motifs on Victorian women’s buttons. These buttons were manufactured for women at a time when the fairer sex was expected to exemplify purity and feminine restraint. So it’s rather strange that Victorian women wore masculine-themed fashion accessories such as these.

This is pure speculation, but women’s fashion in the Victorian era was highly restrictive. Women were laced up in layers and corsets from head to toe. Perhaps wearing masculine buttons was a small act of rebellion. We hope so!

In this piece:

  • Two antique brass buttons, circa 1880-90
  • Antiqued brass cuff links
