This statement-making necklace features two exceptional and rare antique buttons.

On top is an antique hand-painted enamel button. Most Victorian-era porcelain buttons were painted by well-bred women in their parlors. Painting porcelain was a popular domestic art in the late 19th century, similar to needlework or knitting in the 20th century.

The woman who painted this button had particular skill in creating this delicate pink rose on a bright yellow background. In the Victorian language of flowers, pale pink roses symbolize perfect happiness, and this button reminds us of a beautiful summer day in the garden.

A large antique brass filigree button with dazzling cut steel is suspended from the porcelain button. Cut steel buttons were first manufactured in the 1720s and quickly rose in popularity as economical imitations of the diamond and marcasite buttons fashionable in the royal court. We lovingly refer to them as “button bling.”

We named this efflorescent necklace Rosita after the Spanish name meaning pretty rose.

In this piece:

  • Hand-painted antique porcelain button, circa 1890-1920
  • Brass filigree button set with cut steel, circa 1890
  • Tassel cap made with bead caps and Czech glass bead
  • Antiqued brass chain
  • Length is 24” with a 4” extender, plus a 5” tassel
