This necklace features a scarce Victorian-era button. This uncommon and exceedingly beautiful button was dyed royal purple and then etched with floral paisley.  It’s one of the most unusual Victorian-era pearl buttons we’ve ever discovered.

Paisley patterns originated in ancient Persia and traveled the Silk Road to become a European fashion trend in the 18th century. Oscar Wilde and his rebellious European contemporaries were famous for foppishly lounging in their silk paisley smoking jackets and cravats.

In this piece, we fixed the button to a lovely and feminine oval brass locket.

We were elated to find almost a dozen of these extraordinary beauties last year and have saved them for an appropriate release.

In this piece:

  • Rare oval etched and dyed abalone pearl button, circa 1890
  • Oval brass locket
  • Ornamental brass connector, stamped today in the USA in vintage dies
  • Hand-wrapped ruby chalcedony bead chain
  • Antiqued brass bead chain
  • Length is 18” with a 4” extender
