The scene is inspired by the opera Der Trompeter von Sakkingen, based on a famous poem by Joseph Victor von Scheffel published in 1850. A New York Metropolitan Opera program from 1887 described this opera as "one of the most charming poetic works of modern German literature with its beautiful pictures of medieval life and its quaint philosophy and love story."
