It’s a bit cheeky of us to name this necklace in honor of the great Russian pioneer of abstract painting, Wassily Kandinsky. However, we couldn’t resist because its brilliant colors remind us of his ground-breaking use of color.

This necklace showcases two bold pieces of hand-pressed mid-century glass. On top, you’ll find a vintage aqua moonstone hand-pressed in West Germany in the period after WWII. The moonstone holds a stunning jet glass square made in Czechoslovakia during the same period.

Czech and German glass artisans honed their skills for centuries, and then in the early 18th century, they were the first to start pressing hot glass into molds. By the early 20th century, they’d mastered their craft and exported exquisitely detailed glass buttons worldwide.

Both pieces in this necklace were hand-pressed in antique molds and manufactured using centuries-old processes. And they testify to the enduring talents of European glass artisans, including the few still working today.

In this piece:

  • Vintage aqua moonstone glass, made in West Germany, circa 1950-70
  • Vintage faceted jet glass square, made in Czechoslovakia, circa 1950-70
  • Three brass stampings made today in the USA in vintage dies
  • Brass-plated pewter setting made today in the USA
  • Enamelled brass chain
  • Length is 18” with a 4” extender
